St Louis Rams…Eager To Return To Their Winning Ways
The St Louis Rams got their start in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams. The next year they joined the NFL, replacing the St Louis Gunners who had dropped out in 1934. The first several seasons did not go well for the team, as they lost repeatedly and moved through three different stadiums.
In 1943, the Rams, like many other teams, faced a shortage of players due to World War II. They suspended operations for that year making them the first, and one of only two teams to completely suspend operations rather than merging with another team. They returned to the field in 1944 and in 1945, finished the season with a 9-1 record, winning their first ever NFL Championship.
1945 was also the last season the Rams played in Ohio. They moved to Los Angeles to play in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where they remained until 1980, when they moved into Anaheim Stadium.
Between 1949 and 1955 the Rams played in five NFL Championship games, winning once in 1951. In 1950, the Rams became the first professional football team to have all of their games televised. Their television success saw them through the next decade, making them one of the most popular teams despite the fact that they did not have another winning season until 1967 when they reached the championship game for their conference. They went on to win seven straight NFC West Championships between 1973 and 1979.
The Los Angeles Rams had their share of wins and losses, and by 1993 were looking for a new home. Poor management had prevented the team from getting a new stadium in Los Angeles, and after threatening legal action, the owner of the team was allowed to relocate the team to St Louis, taking the name and legacy with them. The move upset many people, mostly in Los Angeles but also throughout the league.
The move proved beneficial for the team. The St Louis Rams made it to Super Bowl XXXIV in 1999, winning against the Tennessee Titans. They made it back to the Super Bowl in 2001 but lost to the New England Patriots in one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.
Recently, the St Louis Rams have had more ups and downs. In 2008, the owner of the Rams passed away, leaving ownership to her son, Chip Rosenbloom who, along with his partner, offered the team up for sale earlier this year.
The St Louis Rams are a team full of history and drama. They play great football and provide tons of entertainment for the whole family.
